Accessible toilets across the UK have been made safer through the Euan’s Guide Safer Toilets campaign and its Red Cord Cards.
The award-winning disabled access charity has reached the milestone of 150,000 accessible toilets in which its life-saving cards remind people to keep red emergency cords untied and within easy reach, ensuring disabled people can call for help when needed.
The bright, easy-to-spot cards have been distributed free of charge thanks to the generosity of donors and the dedication of Euan’s Guide volunteers.
Since the project started over a decade ago, it has made a real difference by improving safety in accessible toilets in shops, cafés, hospitals, train stations and venues throughout the UK.
Euan’s Guide started the Safer Toilets campaign after hearing from their community that the red emergency cords were - and still are - tied up, cut short or not present at all.
The annual Euan’s Guide Access Survey reports that:
· 71% of disabled people have come across an accessible toilet they were unable to use
· over 10% have had to use an emergency cord to call for help
· 76% of disabled people have avoided going somewhere because they knew it didn’t have an accessible toilet
· 49% have avoided going because they couldn't find information about an accessible toilet
Euan’s Guide is now calling on the public to act and help them keep making accessible toilets safer by leaving a review of their favourite accessible loo or ordering free Red Cord Cards on EuansGuide.com.
