A photograph of a youngster with Down’s Syndrome is the ‘People’s Pick’ in an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.
Shay, a regular at the Dame Vera Children’s Charity, was photographed with his mother Celia by Megan Taylor for the Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize 2024.
The East Sussex based charity provides support for children under five, like Shay, with cerebral palsy, chromosome abnormalities and rare genetic disorders.
As the largest organisation of its kind in the UK, the charity provides a range of services including physiotherapy/conductive education, music therapy, speech and language therapy, hydrotherapy, rebound therapy and Portage accredited home play sessions.
The charity seeks to provide children with the building blocks they need for a brighter future.
“It’s wonderful to see our children celebrated,” said Glenys Creese, CEO of Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity,
“Shay has made fantastic progress since he started at the centre and it’s brilliant to see so many people vote for the photograph of Celia and Shay at the National Portrait Gallery.”
