London’s Barbican Cinema is to screen the UK premiere of ‘Inside My Heart’ (15*) at a relaxed showing on March 31 (6.15pm).
The extraordinary documentary follows the rehearsal of movement and speech amongst an ensemble of neurodivergent and disabled actors staging a strange and beautiful fairy tale.
The piece they perform, ‘Furia’ (by Oscar Wagenmans), is a period drama about lust and anger, and is portrayed with beautifully staged shots in rich, saturated colours by filmmaker Saskia Boddeke.
Blurring the lines between the stage and reality, Saskia combines documentary filmmaking with painterly tableaux to showcase both the performance of Furia and the passions, struggles and relationships of Kamak, a professional ensemble for actors with intellectual disabilities.
With compelling footage of the camaraderie and occasional tensions within the acting troupe, Inside My Heart blends the magic of an opera and the depth of a documentary.
The relaxed screening will take place in an environment that is specially tailored for a neurodiverse audience, as well as those who find a more informal setting beneficial.
The lights will be dimmed, though not off, the volume levels will be a little lower than usual and people will be free to move around the screen, make noise, and to enter and exit the cinema at any time, with easy access for any wheelchair users.
Staff are trained and ready to assist with any help you or other audience members may need while you're at the event.
The screening will be followed by a ScreenTalk with artist Sam Chown Ahern, performers Annalie Huberman-Hertz and Francis Majekodunmi and Drag Syndrome founder Daniel Vais, who will discuss inclusion and representation in the arts, hosted by curator Lillian Crawford.
